The Story Behind Markmakers

Markmakers Foundation was founded by Eric and Diane Garfinkel and their 4 children, ages 22, 20, 15 and 7. The idea, conceived at the dinner table, was to give kids the freedom to make their own choices when it came to making a difference in the world.

Markmakers is an IRS approved, 501c3 not for profit. Markmakers is staffed on an unpaid, volunteer basis by the Garfinkel family. The 7% service fee collected from card buyers defrays, in part, credit card processing, web programming and hosting, legal and media relations expenses.
100% of the amount placed on a markmakers card is distributed to the organizations listed here. We deduct nothing. To learn about the $ volume of markmakers card sales and distribution amounts, click the 990 link below.

Markmakers does not expend funds for office space nor solicit via advertising, phone or mail. "Support" contributions from the Garfinkel family and other individuals provide the balance required for these expenses. Markmakers Foundation is an independent organization, unaffilliated with any political party, governmental, non-governmental or religious organization. Before launching Markmakers, the Garfinkel's founded internet and catalog toy retailer, Back To Basics Toys, which is now owned by Scholastic Books. About markmakers:

  • Our mission is to encourage young people to take an interest in the issues of the world and endeavour to make a mark. When a parent gives a young person a markmakers card, that young person is empowered to make a difference. The choice of where, and how, is theirs.

  • 100% of the amount placed on a markmakers card will be passed on to the organizations providing the goods and services provided in our store. Our grants to these organizations (based on the allocation choices made by the young people who "shop" here) are made monthly or bi-monthly. We deduct nothing.

  • the total amount placed on a markmakers card is tax deductible. Your card purchase is a contribution to the Markmakers Foundation, an IRS approved 501c3 organization.

  • you will be charged a 7% service fee at the time of payment. This fee is also tax deductible and helps defray, in part, the cost of operating of our website. Contributions from individuals cover the balance of our operating expenses.

  • Giving thru markmakers is anonymous and password protected. Neither the card giver's name or the recipient's name will be passed on to any organization, including those to which contributions are made. All purchases are secure and private.

  • The minimum amount that can be placed on a markmakers card is $10. Cards may only be purchased at this website using American Express, Visa, Mastercard or Discover. Refunds are not available.
